NEEM OIL FOR FLEAS AND TICKS

Many household pets are plagued with flea problems. Neem oil has been proven effective against the insect order Siphonaptera, which contains the various species of fleas. Spraying neem oil on apes freed them of fleas. Just 24 hours after exposure to 50% neem oil, 95% of C. Felis and 95% of X. Brasiliensis larvae were killed. It was determined that the neem oil was potentially larvacidal against these two species and could effectively be used to control them by treating the breeding sites with appropriate concentrations. Cat and dog fleas can be controlled by treating areas where the pets sleep and outdoor areas. Weekly bathing with a mild shampoo with added neem oil is highly effective for controlling fleas on dogs.

METHODS FOR TREATING DOGS AND CATS

We have found two ways to use neem in controlling fleas and ticks. The above method of adding neem to a mild shampoo is effective if done correctly. Add one or two full eyedroppers of neem oil to 8 oz. of a mild shampoo like baby shampoo, or a chemical-free pet shampoo. The shampoo/neem should be left on the pet 5-10 minutes before rinsing. The other method we have found to be effective is to apply the oil full strength as follows:(test the pure oil on a small area first to be sure there is no reaction) For dogs, apply a thin line of pure neem oil from the back of the neck to the base of the tail. Rub well into fur. We have also rubbed neem oil directly on the animals' body, even the sensitive stomach area. Neem is totally safe to use in this manner and we know of cases where skin rashes caused by flea infestations/allergies have been cleared up by this method. For cats, a few drops on the back of the neck can be rubbed into the fur. Animals wearing cloth or leather collars can also have neem oil applied to the collars.
