EVENT: 1829, INHABITANTS OF ALACHUA COUNTY TO THE PRESEN T TO GENERALANDREW JACKSON, PRESENT OF THE UNITED STATE S OF AMERICA:"We, theUndersigned, Inhabitants of the Count y of Alachua, in East Florida, begleave Respectfully to r epresent, That we regret the necessity of beingagain comp elled to call the attention of the General Government to th esubject of the Florida Indians. Scarely three years ha s elapsed sincesome of our peaceable Inhabitants were but chered by these savages, without respect to age or sex, an d altho' their hostility was soonsubdued, their depredatio ns on our property and lawless conduct havebeen continue s from time to time. We have repeatedly complained to the proper authorities of the Territory, of the impropriety o f many of theprivilege granted to these people; but we ar e sorry to say withouteffect. Our situation at present i s alarming, and rendered still moreso by a leave of absen ce for six moths which we are sorry to learn hasbeen gran ted the Agent. Within a few days parties of them have bee ndetected in fact of plundering our stock, in the very he art of oursettlements, and fifty or sixty miles beyond the ir boundary. About fourweeks since a deputation from the C reek Nation visited these Indians, their business unknown , but certain it is, that their conduct whilehere was cal culated to produce alarm. Since which time we have been informed that a party of one or two hundred of them have com e among theSeminoles, and still remain there. We have fu rther, from the ActingAgent Mr. Sims, information that th e Chiefs of the Seminoles were tohold a Council, for wha t object unknown, and that their deportment ishostile. Fo r the protection of our frontiers, and to quell the fears o fthe people, we could beg leave Respectfully to request t hat a garrisonof four companies of U.S. Troops be station ed at Micanopia, in theCounty. Tho' we admit that the co mpany recently stationed at Fort Kinghad its influence, ye t in case of difficulty their efforts to check theIndian s would have been of little avail being twelve miles withi n theboundary, and affording no possibility of protectio n to our families,or of co-operation with our Militia. W e would beg leave further torequest That, One Thousand sta nd of Arms with Ammunition, may be sentto the Col. Of th e Sixth Regiment of the Florida Militia, in thiscounty, t o be distributed to those who may be supplied with arms. A llwhich we respectfully submit to your consideration.
