John (Jack) Townsend followed his father to Florida, and he too finallysettled in Alachua Co. He was a respected citizen of his community, andwas consulted as one of its leaders on all decisions made in the county.During the Second Seminole Indian War he raised a company of MountedVolunteers and was elected its Captain in Feb., 1840. After some monthsof service as a unit of the Florida Militia, it was mustered into theservice of the United States. After the war he received a land bounty of160 acres for this service.
The U.S. Census of 1850 list John Townsend as living in Benton (nowHernando) County, Fl., the name being changed in Dec. of that year.
John Townsend was elected a County Commissioner there in Jan. 1852,and again in 1855, 1857 and 1863, each a two year term.
When Fl. seceeded from the Union, in 1861, Capt. Jack Townsend, thenwell into his sixties, volunteered for local service in Capt. James H.Breaker's Company of "Old Guards Mounted Rangers." After several monthsthe company was discharged due to the advanced age of its members.
Circuit riding ministers as often as they could made regular visitsto his home for camp meetings. The present day Townsend House Church, successor to the log home of Captain "Jack", which he gave for thecommunity's first meeting house, is a neat frame building set in themidst of orange groves, miles away from any paved road. In May of eachyear, a great reunion is held here for all of the name of Townsend, andthose whose families worshiped here and attended when it was a school. Inthe Townsend cemetery, near by, many of this family are burried.

To the Honorable Judge of the County Court of Alachua
County, Territory of Florida:
ANCIENT RECORDS, ALACHUA CO., FL.

The Petition of ElisabethTownsend, widow of James L. Townsend, deceased, and Henry Hope, both ofthe County and Territory aforesaid, hereby sheweth the on the 18th day ofFebruary 1843, Letters of Administration on the estate of JamesL.Townsend aforesaid, were granted to John Townsend of the aforesaidCounty and Territory; that the said Townsend filed an Administrator’sBond in
the sum of $12,000, with Henry Hope (one of your Petitioners) and Wm. T.Brown for securities; that a part of the estate of the said James L.Townsend was appraised by Thos. E. Barrow, James Dell, and B. M. Dell;that according to the appraisement of said estate by said appraisers, that part by them appraised was worth $8215. ---- That about one hundredhead of cattle together with one or more acc. against the United States,(said accs. being of the value probably of $1000 to $2000.) were notincluded in said appraisement. Your Petitioners respect- fullyrepresent, that the securities on the Administrator’s Bond appraised arefar from being sufficient in comparison of the value of the said Estate;that your Petitioners cannot feel assured that the Security already filedwill ensure a just prompt, impartial, and perfect administration of theestate; but on the contrary your petitioners have reason to believe thatsaid estate is mismanaged or wasted. And therefore your Petitionershereby pray that your that your Petitioner Henry Hope may be releasedfrom being any longer a security for the
said Administrator; that the administrator be required to file good andsufficient securitys for a proper administration of the aforesaid estate, and that he be also required to render a just and true account of hisadministration of the said Estate and your Petitioners will ever pray, etc. etc. etc.

1 male under 5
1 male 15 - 20
8 males 20 - 30

Zelpha was listed as head of the household in the 1840 Federalcensus. She owned large farming property valued at $7,000.00 (a largesum for that time). Her slave property numbered fifty six persons.
Zilpha/Zelpha Standley in 1850 Alachua Co. census is listed age 50,born Georgia.
It is assumed that the female 40 - 50 is Zilpha Standley. The eightmales 20 - 30 are presumed to be boarders, as some boarders appear in the1860 census. The other males in the household are not yet identified.
Zilpha appeared on the census in 1850 in Alachua County, FL. In the1850 Alachua Co. census, the Zilpha Standley household is enumerated asfollows:

James Calhoun Standley was the son of John B. (I) and ZilphaStandley. John B. (I) died 4 July 1837, when John B. (II) was 20. JohnB. Standley, Zilpha Standley and John Townsend were appointed guardiansof James Calhoun Standley on 5 May 1846 -- I believe that this is hiselder brother, now over 21, his mother and her brother. Why thisappointment is so late, I don't know. Perhaps the estate of John B. (I)has been settled and a guardian is now required by law.

It appears that James Calhoun "Cal" Standley, married Florida A. Dell 24February 1859 and died some time later that year. I believe that FloridaA. Standley was a minor at the time of her husband's death and as such, had a guardian appointed to her.[SStandley.FTW]

1 male under 5
1 male 15 - 20
8 males 20 - 30
1 female 40 - 50

Zelpha was listed as head of the household in the 1840 Federalcensus. She owned large farming property valued at $7,000.00 (a largesum for that time). Her slave property numbered fifty six persons.

Standley was a minor at the time of her husband's death and as such, had a guardian appointed to her.
