! 1810 census for Stephen Burke (AT's step-father) family shows one malechild under 10 years . 1840 census indicates birth between 1800-1810,unable to locate family in 1850 census, 186 0 census indicates age as 56years. 1811 probate filing of his father John Smith's estate ind icatedthat Alexander Tobias was in his 9th year. In the 1830 US Census forRichland Co, SC , the A T Smith family is listed as one male aged 30-40,two male children, aged 0-5, one fem ale child aged 0-5 and 1 female aged20-30.
! AT's early occupation was said to have been that of blacksmith and heoperated several shop s in and around Columbia. However, at some point,he became a bookkeeper for the firm of Brys on Mercantile Co in Columbia,a position he held for 7 years (based on a business directory f rom 1859,this company may have been that of Robert Bryce, a dealer in GeneralMerchandise, G roceries, Hardware, and Dry Goods, located at 87Richardson Street, in Columbia, SC). This sa me directory did not show alisting for A. T. Smith, either as a businessman or citizen.
! After his first 7 children were born (about 1841/42), he bought a 160acre farm in Fairfiel d Co, SC about four miles out from Ridgeway, SC. Hemoved some of his family to the farm (lea ving Malvina, Martha andGeorgianna in the city for schooling). Warren, Ken, and Henry were taken, along with his wife, Mary Ann, to work the farm. No mention is madehere of the daughte r Harriet. Farm was later (about 1860) sold todaughter Malvina and husband, Hugh Weir, afte r son, Warren, convinced ATto move the family to Florida.
! AT moved back into Columbia and worked until 1863 when he joined therest of the family i n Florida. Shortly after arriving he contractedpneumonia, died, and was buried near Ft Mason , between Eustis andUmatilla, FL.
