Stephen Matlock lived on a large plantation in Tattnall Co., Ga. on theAltamaha River, south of Glennville, Ga. He died at the age of 80according to his tombstone. He and his first wife Mary Standley and hissecond wife Mary Copeland are all buried in the Matlock Family Cemeteryon the family land in Tattnall Co., Ga., near the Altamaha River.
Notes from a telephone conversation of Lyn Hall's (Houston, Tx.) andRobert Phillips who grew up on the land which was formerly the MatlockPlantation, near Glennville, Ga.
"The Matlocks must have had a state of the art plantation. Theyprobably grew cotton and indigo, harvested timber and posibly had aturpentine mill. Canals were dug so that riverboats could be loaded withgoods from the plantation to be sent down the Altamaha River.
The cemetery has less than a dozen graves with an iron fence aroundit. Some of the tombstones were still legible when he last saw it aboutfifteen years ago.
The Big Hammock Natural Area has plants that don't grow anywhere elsein the world.
Robert Phillip's 81yr. old father says that the plantation house wason the same side of the road as the cemetery, but past the cemetery nearthe Creek on high ground. There is not a trace of it now. Even the brickchimneys are gone, probably used to build other houses. He said that thehouse had to be on high ground because the river floods cover all theland except the hills. It is a huge River.
The Indians used this land. His father would find all sorts of Indianarrowheads everytime he plowed. There is an unexcavated Indian mound byJessie Lake."
The Matlock Family Cemetery is located north of the Altamaha River inTattnall Co., Ga.
