It isn't often that we find instances where one of our ance stors, several generations back, took the time to record, f or the Bible record, everything he knew about his ancestr y up to his own life and time - asdid my
great-grandfather , Capt. James S. LeGette, CSA, b. 16 Feb., 1823 - d. 8Oct . 1909. He not only did this, but he also wrote a first pe rsonaccount of his experiences in the Civil War entitled ' I Was InWashington the Night
Lincoln Was Shot: - a copy o f which was preserved by the 'MarlboroHerald Advocate' ... ........In the following 'Family Bible' account,Capt. LeG ette began with his own great grandfather: 'William LeGette , my
Great-Grandfather, was born in France. He and his tw o brothers, John C.and Henry, were three of the 500,000 Hu g(u)enots that left France intime of the Religious persecu tion. My Great-Grandfather, William, married a lady
in Eng land and came to America, himself and wife (Patience) and t wobrothers younger than himself, landed in Philadelphia . A colony ofHug(u)enots settled in Pennsylvania, movin g from there to Anson County,N.C., on
account of further R eligious persecution, which was nearly as bad as inFrance . A great many of their friends came with them, formin g a colonywhere Lilesville, N. C., now stands. After movi ng (there), (and when)the
Seven years war broke out, my Gr eat Grandfather and his three sons,William (Jr.), Absalo m and James, fought through this war. Soon afterthe clos e (of the Seven Years War), my Great Grandfather and his th reesons, with
other friends, came to South Carolina and en tered largely on lands whereMcLaurin Mill now stands, an d (he) gave the site for the Beaver DamBaptist Church. H e (was) a Baptist preacher and preached at CatfishBaptis t
Church during the year 1768. His oldest daughter, Beatti e, married LukeRobinson; he (Luke R.) died and then she ma rried a Mr. (Jonathan) Adams, and was the mother of Shockle y, John, Harris and William Adams, all of
Adamsville, Marlb oro County, S. C. My Great Grandfather with his threeson s built the mill on Beaver Dam Creek known as the LeGette O ld Mill.(Statements in parentheses were added by John C . Cottingham.)
