EVENT: 1823, Alachua, FL, "The Florida Association sent Dr . Kelly ofCharleston to Alachua to attend to the medical d epartment of thesettlement (Arredondo grant). Dr. James K elly apparently did not agreeto serve as physician for th e Florida Association nor did he find muchof a settlemen t in Alachua. Some years later he testified that he landed in St. Augustine in Nov 1822 and stayed there 3 months be fore going toPalatka. Later he traveled west on the roa d cut by Mr. Hayne for theNew York Co as far as Levy's pla ntation, where the road ended. Hestayed 7 or 8 months an d frequently visited Wanton's dwellings nearby.He furthe r testified that there were no other white people in the vicinity." The act was approved 3 0 Aug 1842 and established the Alachualand district an d a land office at Newnansville.
