SPRING GROVE GUARDS: "On January 29, 1835, the Florida Leg islativeCouncil approved an act to "raise and organize ta n independentuniformed company of mounted riflemen in Ala chua County called theSpring Grove Guards."Some 50-60 me n joined the company along with "Somethree or four boys be longed to the company whose ages were about 13 and14 year s. Rawles said. (George Rawles, First Lieutenant). "Membe rs ofthe Spring Grove Guards were drawn from both Spring G rove and Hogtown(located on Hogtown Creek, in present-da y west or west-northwestGainesville). By direction of t he Captain, some 15 or 20 men would goon scouts about onc e a week, remaining out sometimes one and sometimesthre e days going sometimes 10 miles and sometimes farther."
At a place called Hickory Sink a party of about 6-8 white s came upon asmany indians who were killing stock owned an d fed by the whites. Thewhites under took to disarm the i ndians. A struggle ensued during whichblows were exchange d freely. One of the indians fired upon the whitesand sho ts were exchanged on both sides. The lndians had one man k illedand one wounded, the whites had 3 men wounded. Som e of the men weremembers of the Spring Grove Guards not o n duty. Capt S. V. Walker uponlearning of the fight notif ied the Indian Agent, Wiley Thompson at FortKing. He tol d Thompson that his 100 + member Spring Grove Guard were going to scout along the indian reservation line. Thompson s aid thatwould be good but do not cross the line. "If yo u fall in with any, tryto get possession of them without b loodshed--take their guns and packsfrom them--and I thin k it will have a good effect to lodge them in aGaol. Kee p a strict register of the guns and that may be taken so th atthey may be truned over to this office and eventually re turned to theirowners." A report of the activities of th e Spring Grove Guard statesthat it does not appear that an y indians resisted the settlement afterthe affair at Hicko ry Sink."
Although the company never formally disbanded its activiti es appear tohave ceased by 1844. In a report by the US Ar my it was stated that thiswas a company of mounted volunte ers claiming service from June 17 to Nov28, 1835, a perio d of 5 months prior to the commencement of the SeminoleWar . Although this company of militia appears to have bee n a looselyknit organization, its members were unspired b y patriotism as well asself preservation and consisted o f hardy pioneers with a cause toestablish order in the Ter ritory of FL. Former members of the SpringGrove guards te stified at Newnansville in Jan 1844. Some of their namesa re George Rawles, Henry Hope, Robert Berin, David C. Cash , SeabornGarrason, Enoch T. EVENT: 1844, Newnansville: James Hague said, "Resided a t that time inthe Hogtown settlement...about 4 miles fro m where the company mustered. At the time of the fight the re were some friendly indians at my house. To my knowledg e nothing more was done by the indians until thecommenceme nt of the war when they burnt some houses. I did some litt leservice in this company but not much. We went sometime s on Scoutslooking to see what the indians were doing . I do not recollect ofseeing an indian when I was on the se scouts, I was not regularlydischarged from this compan y I do not recollect when the company brokup." Spring Grove est. 9 Sept 1829 with Joseph B. Lancaster as P ostmaster, discontinued 21 Dec 1848 - was in Southern secti on of Alachua Co. nearMicanopy. It was on a post road fro m Alligator (present day Lake City)via Newnansville, Sprin g Grove to Seminole Agency, a distance of 90 Mile.
Also found by Jim Powell were typed notes from an old pos t office bookwhich lists:
Tallahassee to Dells PO 178 miles
Tallahassee to Spring Grove 193 miles
Tallahassee to Wantons 202 miles
These excerpts are from History of Alachua County - 1824/1 969: – JessG. Davis: "When Spring Grove was founded it i s unknown. The firstdefinite record of Spring Grove's ex istence is found September 9, 1829,when a postoffice wa s opened there. The postoffice was abandonedDecember 21 , 1848. It is fair speculation to believe it was located about one mile west of present-day Interstate 75 and Northw est 39thAvenue. A map drawn for the U.S. Post Office Dep artment in 1839, byDavid H. Burr, shows Spring Grove on t he Micanopy-Newnansville road, about half-way between the t wo towns. When the census of AlachuaCounty was made in 1 830, three census tracts were established inAlachua Count y. These were Wanton's (Micanopy), Dell's near Santa Fe River, and Spring Grove. "Spring Grove had the distinction , in 1836, ofbeing chosen County Seat. "The first Count y Seat chosen by theLegislative Council (December 29, 182 4, when Alachua County wascreated) was temporarily at th e home of Edward Wanton (Micanopy). OnDecember 3, 1825 , the county seat was moved temporarily to EdwardDixon' s house. "November 15, 1828, the Legislative Council name dNewnansville the County Seat. However, Newnansville fel l withinColumbia County when county boundaries were chang ed, February 4, 1832.The Council moved the County Seat t emporarily back to Edward Dixon'shouse. "On February 10 , 1835, another change in boundaries broughtNewnansvill e back into Alachua County. However, when the Legislativ eCouncil chose a new County Seat, February 4, 1836, it by -passedNewnansville and selected Spring Grove. "Spring Gr ove remained theCounty Seat until February 10, 1839, whe n it was re-established atNewnansville. By 1839, most inl and white settlements had been abandonedby white settlers , and many had been burned by the Indians. WhetherSprin g Grove suffered such temporary abandonment or burning i sunknown; in any case, it never regained importance in cou nty affairs. For several years during the war, Newnansvil le became the haven forrefugee settlers and their familie s." SPRING GROVE GUARDS: "On January 29, 1835, the Florida Leg islativeCouncil approved an act to "raise and organize ta n independentuniformed company of mounted riflemen in Ala chua County called theSpring Grove Guards."Some 50-60 me n joined the company along with "Somethree or four boys be longed to the company whose ages were about 13 and14 year s.
Although this company of militia appears to have bee n a looselyknit organization, its members were inspired b y patriotism as well asself preservation and consisted o f hardy pioneers with a cause toestablish order in the Ter ritory of FL. BACKGROUND: "Far more characteristic of the FL frontier we re farmerswith few if any slaves who, with the assistanc e of their families, liveda much more nearly self-sufficie nt life. They wore homespun made bytheir wives and daught ers from their own cotton and wool. They werelikely to li ve in a double pen log cabin with a passage through the middle and with sheds attached. Huge chimneys and fireplaces , sometimesmade of sticks and clay, were common. Heavy sh utters closed the windowopenings. Other common features w ere cane and hide bottom chairs, waterpail and gourd, ti n basin and rooer towel, split pine bedsteads, andmattress es filled with straw, Spanish moss, cotton or occasionall ywool. BACKGROUND/NEWNANSVILLE: Dr. A. Rhett Motte, a surgeon i n the SeminoleWar wrote in 1837, "About 8 miles from Newna nsville we crossed theSantaFee River, over the natural bri dge---Newnansville before this warcould boast of only on e block house, a courthouse and one tavern, builtin the sa me primitive syle of architecture. Now it consists of 2 ri valhotels, a fort, shops in abundance, and shantees so num erous that forseveral days after my arrival I could scarce ly find my way through thelabyrinth of streets and lanes l aid out with disregard to all rules ofuniformity. This su dden increase of population and consequentprosperity of th is incipient city was caused entirely by an innate dreadan d very rational dislike of its inhabitants of being scalped . Theywere mostly small farmers who had emigrated from di fferent states andsettled in Alachua County to plant corn , hoe potatoes, and beget littlewhite-headed responsibilit ies... The mansions of Newnansville werecertainly very uni que in appearance. Each abode consisted of a shedbuilt o f slab-boards, enclosing an area about 12 ft square and wer eevidently calculated for exercising the rights of hospita lity: for theoccupants excluded nothing even the rains alw ays finding readyadmittance. In some sheds there were sev eral families living huddledtogether, under the same roof ; each occupying a corner of the room andoccasionally a fi fth family in the center..."
