Luther Gracy Left Name Behind
There are moments when I wish time travel existed in more than the mind.I'd go back and visit some of the communities that once existed in thisarea and some of those that have moved from the original sites or changedtheir original names.
If I'd really lived back then, I probably wouldn't have seen more thantwo or three communities, unless my family was well to do or I was aschool teacher. Poor folks did little traveling and a whole lot of work, both as youngsters and as adults.
One fellar that came to this area did right well for himself -- he hadtwo communities using his name: Gracy and Gracy Station/Crossing/Siding.(This latter was the same place, but I've found it written each way).
Luther C. Gracy came to Florida from Tennessee in 1873, according to JessDavis in his "Alachua County History". Davis also wrote that Gracy owned7,000 acres of land in Alachua County.
Gracy built his home between Alachua and High Springs, about 20 milesnorthwest of Gainesville.
A post office was established November 14, 1884 with Charles B. Easterlinas the first postmaster. (Other postmasters and then listed but I willomit them here since they are also in the next article from 1992). But,like so many community post offices, this one closed its doors April 3,1902 and service moved to High Springs.
The 1888 Alachua Immigration Association pamphlet said Gracy was on theSavannah, Florida and Western Railway, had a sawmill, a store and severaldwelling houses.
There's no date for when Gracy acquired its school house, but Jamie Merryof Micanopy opened the school in August of 1890. A few weeks later, Mrs.D.I. (Daisey) Tilghman of Gainesville was appointed as the teacherbeginning in November.
Also in August, the citizens of Gracy met at the school house to "deviseways and means for building a Methodist Church" in the neighborhood. After several meetings, it was decided to build the new church near theschool.
Since the church was not ready, Sunday services were held in the schoolbuilding. On various Sundays, the Rev. J.B. Taylor, the Rev. J.R. Taborand other visiting ministers took turns preaching at the school.
In September G.W. Easterlin opened a general mercantile store near hishome. He stocked it with a wide assortment of items.
The farmers of the Gracy area were planting less cotton in 1891 andplanting "more of something to be consumed at home".
W.C. Rives had the best English peas of the area and some of the finestcorn. Folks even said he did right well with his cotten that year.
W.N. Norris was busy improving his place while Easterlin was busy withvisitors. He seemed to have a steady flow of overnight guests or dinnerguests.
Cato, Alachua County Tax Collector, not only spent the night withEasterlin, but also left a list of folks who had not paid their personaland poll tax in districts 3 and 20. Justice Easterlin was to collectthese taxes.
Exactly when the community began to die is not known, but events like thedecision by Rives and his partner, Atwater, to move their grist mill fromGracy to Alachua in June 1897 helped destroy the town. In their newlocation, they planned to add a cotten gin.
The decline of the community was evident with the loss of the post officein 1902. Nowadays, losing a post office or a business does notnecessarily mean the decline of a community. Many folks are moving justto get away from paying both town and county taxes, tired of living withtoo much noise and not enough space.

Timber was a base for Gracy's rise
The county once had a town named Gracy, with a post office established in1884. It also had a Gracy Crossing/Gracy Siding. These places werenamesakes for a man called Luther C. Gracy.
Gracy, born in Murray County, Tenn., was the son of Joseph and ElizabethGracy. His father was a Tennessee farmer and landowner. According to JessDavis' "History of Alachua County" , Gracy came to Florida March 16,1873. Gracy's obituary in the Gainesville Daily Sun, April 1922 did notmention when he arrived but did indicate that he had moved from ColumbiaCounty, Tenn., to a spot between Alachua and High Springs that laterbecame known as Gracy.
He began small, but before his death owned 7,000 acres of land in thecounty and 3,000 acres elsewhere in Florida. He had both turpentine andlumber businesses for many years, and became one of the largest timbermento operate in Alachua County.
In addition to the mills he had at Gracy and the crossing/siding, Gracydeveloped mills and turpentine stills throughout the county.
In December 1895 Gracy married Margaret Stephens of Troy, Tenn. She wasborn Dec 28, 1864 in Troy. They lived at his namesake town and in HighSprings for ten years before moving to Gainesville where he built a homeon East Church Street, NE 4th Avenue. (This is the same Gracy house whichserved as last months Designer's Showcase).
In a biographical sketch in F.W. Bucholz's "History of Alachua County,Florida," Bucholz indicated that Gracy worked hard for prohibition,"being one of the most ardent temperance workers in the county. Hisgreatest work was in assisting people of small means to buy homes andfarms, giving them easy terms and in many instances extended the periodof payment over 20 years."
Both Gracy's were members of the First Methodist Church. He died April 5,1922. Surviving him were his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Sam Harn andMaurine Gracy; one son, L. Cecil Gracy; two sisters, Sallie MacDonald,West Palm Beach, and Mrs. J.T. Lowery, Lynnville, Tenn.; and twobrothers, W.B. Gracy, Lakeland, and Dr. B.B. Gracy, Smyrna, Tenn. (TheGracy's also had two sons who died when young).
Margaret Gracy died Jan. 10, 1951. In her years in Florida she was one ofthe founders and the first president of the New Century Woman's Club ofHigh Springs. She also held the presidency of the 20th Century Club ofGainesville twice. (This club is now known as the Gainesville Woman'sClub.)
Her survivors were the two daughters and son, but Maurine had marriedGordon W. Graham and was living in San Carlos, Calif. There were also 11grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Also surviving here were asister, Mrs. J.W. Brantly, Louisville, Ky.; two nephews, Lt. Col John B.Neel, Petersburg, Va., and E. Brantly, Hollywood, Calif.; and two nieces,Mrs. Otto Kalich, High Springs, and Mrs. Ashby Miller, Louisville, Ky.
Both Gracy's left behind a legacy of working for the community andcounty. It's time to remember them, along with all the other people whohave worked through the years to improve life in our area.

High Springs Herald, August 13, 1992
by Mary Lis Forrester
Village of Gracy in High Springs helped city grow in early days
High Springs, in the early days, was the nucleus of trade, religion andeducation. However, there were outlying villages that helped High Springsbecome an important place.
Gracy, Florida was founded by Mr. L. C. Gracy, a highly esteemed andaggressive citizen of Alachua County. Gracy was located near the railroadabout 2 miles east of High Springs. (There is an abandoned motel on US441 very near where the village was located.)
The son of Joseph and Elizabeth Gracy, Luther came to Alachua County fromMaury County, Tennessee at a very young, adventurous age.
Miss Margaret Stephens was the wife of L.C. Gracy. Her home place wasTroy, Tennessee. She was the aunt of our Mai Neel Kahlich. The Gracy'shad three children, Gladys, Margaret and L. Cecil Gracy. (Note by SamGoforth: Margaret's correct name is Maurine).
There was a school in Gracy because in an article in the High SpringsHerald by Dondo Underwood, he states that he attended school in Gracybefore going to High Springs.
Luther C. Gracy had a large sawmill and turpentine still in the villagenamed in his honor. He later developed mill and turpentine interest onlarge scale in various place in the county. He was probably the largestlumberman in the county. He owned 7,000 acres of land in Alachua and3,000 acres in Columbia County.
The post office began in 1884 and closed in 1902, thus giving the lengthof time Gracy was a village. The postmasters were:
Charles B. Easterlin, Nov 14, 1884 to April 13, 1887; Samuel H. Spencer,April 13, 1887 to Feb 2, 1894; Luther C. Gracy, Feb 2, 1894 to March 1,1898; William T. McLendon, March 1, 1898 to Nov 23, 1900; William Norris,Nov 23, 1900 to Jan 23, 1901; Mary L. Wetherton, Jan 23, 1901 to April 3,1902.
The Gracy house (in High Springs) was a large, lovely, two-story housewith large front porch. It was located on a vacant lot beside the Truthchurch on First Street. The house was vacant many years.
Then in about 1954, the robbers of the High Springs Bank set fire to thehouse and it burned down. The fire was set to distract from their robbingthe bank.
L.C. Gracy moved to Gainesville about the time the University of Floridacame to the city. He was a leader, a born leader and was for good worksparticularly in the cause of prohibition.
His greatest work was in assisting people of small income to buy homesand farms. He gave easy terms and extended period of payment over 20years, if desired, which proved a great help and advantage to hundredswho otherwise would never have secured a start in life.
"Mr. L.C. Gracy died in Gainesville, April 5, 1922. Not only Gainesvillebut the entire county lost a splendid citizen and one who worked forthose things that make for betterment of conditions."
"Hundreds claimed him as their friend and advisor, and he left a void inmany hearts and homes that can never be filled."
