The parasympathetic system consists of the
vagus nerve which
originates in the medulla of the brain and branches to the heart
and digestive organs. Parasympathetic stimulation decreases heart
rate and the force of cardiac muscle contraction. Under
parasympathetic stimulation, heart rate can go as low as 20-30
bpm. Postsynaptic nerve endings of the parasympathetic system
release acetylcholine.
